The HUMLOG Challenge

In partnership with the Hanken Schools of Economics’ HUMLOG Institute, the Learners Track features The HUMLOG Challenge, an international virtual competition, focused on developing local solutions to problems related to humanitarian logistics.

This year, The HUMLOG Challenge focuses on Community Disaster Resilience. The Covid-19 pandemic has tested communities across the world on preparedness and resilience. Major hazards such as hurricanes, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, droughts, and landslides, among others, constantly threaten the livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations across the world. In the context of accelerated climate change and population growth, the current trend of frequent major disasters is expected to increase. To mitigate this trend, increased Disaster Resilience and Community Preparedness is essential to reduce the potential impact of humanitarian crises on the poorest communities who are disproportionately affected by these disasters.

EiR programs are a vital part of entrepreneurship education as they support teaching, encourage creation and sharing of best practices, and promote more opportunities for research. The Global Business School Network, in partnership with Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), launched an impact community of entrepreneur in residence (EiR) programs. This impact community will work to amplify these benefits of EiR programs by expanding international peer to peer sharing, enhancing the effectiveness, and improving the impact of EiR programs. Through this community, schools with existing EiR programs will work together to publish monthly articles and create exchange opportunities within the network.

With growing pressure for companies to be more sustainable, future leaders will need to understand ways in which entire systems interrelate and have an impact on entire value chains if they are to effectively respond to resource limitations and climate change. In addition, there is growing pressure from students for sustainability to be incorporated into business courses. This has led to an overall trend to embed sustainability into the ethos of teaching in business schools. While the movement towards greater integration of sustainability into the fundamentals of business education is advancing, there is significant progress that still needs to be made.

Global integration, political uncertainty and growing inequality have increased public scrutiny of business operations. Business schools need to better prepare future leaders for the challenges of this modern global business environment. They also need to demonstrate that the values and principles of their education are aligned with public expectations that business contribute to a fair and prosperous global economy.

This will require moving beyond dedicated business ethics or corporate social responsibility classes to a model that incorporates social considerations into the core of business curricula. This group of over 40 business schools around the world work together to realize this vision.

GBSN and Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative of the UN Global Compact have joined forces to support the efforts of the GBSN for Business and Human Rights (BHR). The BHR was founded in 2017 by the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, the Geneva School for Economics and Management, and the Alliance Manchester Business School. The BHR network currently comprises over 40 business schools that come together annually to discuss how to advance human rights in business education.
